This review on Place-Based Approaches (PBAs) by the Youth Endowment Fund and Centre for Evidence and Implementation provides a useful summary of key challenges and various methodologies in evaluating place-based work.

Place-based work involves collaborative, long-term work in specific geographic areas to address local needs through multiple agencies, making evaluation complex.

Emphasis on developmental evaluation is recommended, allowing for continuous learning and program adaptation. Engaging community stakeholders in both the design and evaluation process is crucial, as are hybrid designed that combine multiple approaches are best suited for evaluating PBAs.
