Place-Based Funders Action Learning by Place Matters

In April 2023, Place Matters held a roundtable of place-based funders to discuss the position of funding organisations in the sector. This paper outlines the key themes from this discussion.

This paper summarises what we heard from 12 national and regional funders of place-based work, and 5 place-based change practitioners, when asked what they see as examples of good practice in place-based work, and what they hope to see in the future, for greater impact.

A unifying question that emerges from these conversations is ‘How can funders have greater impact and what changes in their role and ways of working would enable this?’

One of the strongest themes that emerges is the shift funders are making from funding programmes and organisations to seeing themselves as part of an eco-system of actors who have a role to play in shifting systems at all levels: place, regional and national.
